career as a world renowned leader on Close Combat
techniques, as knife designer, and as the foremost
expert on Riot Control. Applegate served in the
U.S. Army Military Intelligence, and was a member
of the OSS during World War ll. His book Kill
or Get Killed is the best selling book on
unarmed and armed close combat in history. The
U.S. Marine Corps has reprinted Kill or
Get Killed as an official reference training
manual, and Applegates revolutionary knife
fighting and Point Handgun Shooting Techniques
are in wide use, earning the unparalleled respect
of of virtually everyone in the police shooting
and military communities. Applegate is also the
winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner
Award. His books include Kill or Get Killed, Crowd
& Riot Control, Point Shooting, Shooting For

Belt
Fighting
The belt is among the finest of all improvised
weapons. It is legal, always readily available,
and devastatingly effective. It can be used at
ranges from four feet to six inches, it is incredibly
quick, and will leave welts or lacerations wherever
it hits. Whipped in a blur and swung in a tight
figure-8, the belt becomes an intimidating weapon.
In skilled hands, it can easily defeat a knife,
a club, or multiple unarmed opponents. It is a
popular weapon, having been used in streetfights
and barroom brawls for decades. It is often pulled
in situations where a weapon is required, but
drawing a knife or gun might be considered too
extreme while it is possible to kill with
a belt, it is difficult to do so accidentally.
To observe a beautiful display of beltfighting,
you can rent Fist of Legend starring Jet
Li (he uses the belt in many of his films). |
The
Subtle Blade
Fighting with a weapon is always preferable to
depending on ones empty hands. A streetfight
is not an athletic competition or a friendly roughhousing
match where there are rules to be adhered to and
the fight will be stopped before the loser is
seriously injured. On the contrary, when you are
accosted by a menacing stranger (or group of strangers)
on the street, you are fighting for your life,
there are no rules, and the loser has a high probability
of being maimed or killed. If you find yourself
forced into such a situation, you want every conceivable
advantage. This document thoroughly covers the
art of knife fighting, detailing the many finer
points of the art. |

Wounding Factors
This article brings together
what is believed to be the most credible information
regarding wound ballistics. It cuts through the
haze and confusion, and provides common-sense,
scientifically supportable, principles by which
the effectiveness of law enforcement ammunition
may be measured. It is written clearly and concisely.
The content is credible and practical. The information
contained in this article is not offered as the
final word on wound ballistics. It is, however,
an important contribution to what should be an
ongoing discussion of this most important of issues. |
International
Marksmanship
The purpose of this manual is to record the principals
and techniques of International Rifle shooting
with the primary objective of improving the shooters
performance in competition. The techniques and
ideas put forth in this manual represent the collective
thinking of the United States medal winners of
the last World Championships, Pan America and
Olimpic Games. These techniques and ideas are
not to be taken as the final word or solution
to success in international shooting, but
rather the best information presently available
to guide the development of the international
rifle shooter. |

Longsword
Book 1
The purpose of this first book of a four book
series is to train the student in the methods,
principles and techniques of European Medieval
Martial Arts, focusing on dagger, grappling and
the longsword. This work was originally created
to form the basis of the recruit training program
for the Academy of European Medieval Martial Arts
or AEMMA. References for this work include but
are not limited to historical documents and treatises
such as Fiore dei Liberi, 1410, "Flos Duellatorum",
Hans Talhoffer, 1459, "Alte Armatur und Ringkunst"
, Hans Talhoffer, 1467, "Fechtbuch aus dem
Jahre 1467", Jakob Sutor, 1612, "Künftliches
Fechtbuch" The Academys mission is
to resurrect the combat skills, philosophies,
principles of an accomplished European Medieval
martial artist and to achieve a state which would
be consistent with that of a medieval warrior
in both technology and ideal. The goal of
this organization is to resurrect European medieval
martial arts to the same level as todays
Asian martial arts schools and academies, and
to re-establish medieval combat as a viable 21st
century martial art alternative. The objective
is to not only achieve realism in the discipline
of armoured and un-armoured combat, but also the
philosophy and principles that surrounds this
form of martial art. |
Ninja
Knife Throwing
A knife is the first weapon given to a Ninja.
He or she learns Tanto-jitsu, knife art. As well
as becoming an expert in hand-to-hand combat,
a Ninja learns to throw knives, as well as many
other objects. But some knives are designed specifically
for throwing. With such specialty knives, the
Ninja knife throwing expert is particularly dangerous.
Normally, a Ninja carries four such throwing knives
as well as a combat knife which could be thrown
if necessary. Ninja throw knives, primarily, to
achieve three goals:
To distract.
To wound.
To kill.
Learn the art of ninja knife throwing. This fully
illustrated guide teaches everything there is
to know on the art. |
Non-Lethal
Weaponry
In this report I have sought to explore the nature
of non-lethal weaponry in the Department of Defense
(DOD) as a framework for future actions related
to their successful integration into the United
States (US) military arsenal. I selected non-lethal
weapons (NLWs) as a topic of research with the
hope that military planners, developers, and operators
alike would benefit from a report on NLWs in three
respects: First, as a topical chronology for those
familiar with the subject of non-lethality; second,
as a means of concise subject indoctrination for
newcomers to the field; and third, as a calibration
check of DOD activities aimed at the advancement
of non-lethal weaponry. |
Old
Sword Play
THE ensuing lessons on Old Sword-Play
have been compiled from the works of various author
of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth
centuries; and it has been my intention so to
arrange them as to make the antique methods accessible
to the student without the labour of searching
the pages of books in various languages, many
of which are very difficult to procure, and much
more so to understand. There are those who affect
to ridicule the study of obsolete weapons, alleging
that it is of no practical use ; everything, however,
is useful to the Art of Fence which tends to create
an interest in it, and certain it is that such
contests as Rapier and Dagger, Two
hand Sword, or Broadsword and Handbuckler,
are a very great embellishment to the somewhat
monotonous proceedings of the ordinary assault
of arms. The Combinations will be found
extremely useful as forms of set play
for combats on the dramatic stage. I presuppose
that, before turning his attention to the swordsmanship
of bygone centuries, our student will have made
himself reasonably proficient in the use of the
modern arms-the foil and the sabre-under the tuition
of some competent master. |

Secrets
of the Ninja
Ninja were the Ultimate Warriors of feudal Japan.
Cloaked in darkness and secrecy, the Ghost-Soldiers
of the Invisible Fist struck fear into the hearts
of their enemies and wreaked havoc on those who
incurred their wrath. The principles of these
occult methods have not changed and apply even
today. The principles and forms presented herein
are intended for use by a lone individual. Some
Ninjitsu ryu (schools) advocate the use of such
equipment as shuriken, grapples, shaken, even
poisons and firearms. These schools train to use
or improvise any weapon that may further the objective
of the mission. There is much to be said for this
approach, even among the schools that practice
invisibility such as the Black Dragon Ryu, Therefore,
sections explaining the classical Ninja weapons
are included. Yet, study of this Art does not
require weapons of any sort.
Sensei (teacher) once said, "A naked man,
alone, in an empty room, can practice Ninjitsu."
One cannot move quickly and silently when encumbered
by various tools. And, if captured, these devices
would certainly be confiscated. What is one to
do then? Here then are the means to be invisible
in the presence of the enemy, to penetrate unseen
anywhere, and to pass without leaving a trace.

the Moonlit Path of the Shadow-Warrior,the Invisible
Assassins of Feudal Japan, the NINJA. |
Self-Defense
with a Walking Stick
It must be understood that the new art of self-defence
with a walking-stick, herewith introduced for
the first time, differs essentially from single-stick
or sword-play; for a man may be a champion in
the use of sword or single-stick [EN2] and yet
be quite unable to put a walking-stick to any
effective use as a weapon of defence. The simple
and sufficient reason to account for this is that
both in single-stick and sword-play a cut is always
taken up by the hilt of the weapon, whereas if
you attempted to guard a blow with a walking-stickwhich
has no hiltin the same way as you would
with a sword, the blow would slide down your stick
onto your hand and disable you. Therefore, in
order to make a stick a real means of self-defence,
it has been necessary to devise a system by which
one can guard a blow in such a way as to cause
it to slide away from the hand instead of toward
it, and thus obviate the risk of being disarmed
by being hit upon the fingers.
After some fifteen years of hard work, such a
system has been devised by a Swiss professor of
arms, M. Vigny. [EN3] It has recently been assimilated
by me into my system of self-defence called Bartitsu.
