The SKS has a conventional carbine layout, with a wooden stock and no pistol grip.

Most versions are fitted with an integral folding bayonet, which hinges down from the end of the barrel, and some versions, such as the Yugoslavian–made M59/66 variant are equipped with a grenade launching attachment.

A standard SKS is semi–automatic and has a fixed/hinged 10 round magazine, which is loaded from the top of the rifle manually either by inserting the ammunition one round at a time or with a disposable 10–round stripper clip. It is a gas–operated weapon that has a spring–loaded operating rod and a gas rod that work the action via gas pressure pushing against them. Also, it has a "tilting bolt" action locking system.

The purpose of this manual is to provide the necessary instructions and manufacturing data required for the conversion of the Ruger 20–22, semi–automatic carbine, into a selective fire automatic unit.

The purpose of this manual is to provide the instructions and manufacturing data for the conversion of the Ruger 20–22, semi–automatic carbine, into a selective fire automatic unit.

When modified to the specifications given, the weapon retains its semi–automatic mode of operation and also allows fully automatic functioning by moving the selector lever into the proper position.

The Ruger 10–22 made its debut in 1964, and has become one of the world's most popular firearms of its type in the world.

This weapon is the logical choice for automatic conversion because they have proven themselves to be well made, very rugged, maintain a relatively light weight, and are adaptable to many different sighting arrangements.

The designs offered in this complete guide represent the stubborn persistence of a military ordnance man who undertook the project simply because they said it couldn't be done.

The project developed into a small Class II manufacturing business, which sold the converted 10/22's in most of the states where they are legal to own. To date, after at least 100,000 rounds fired, there is yet to be a parts failure, Ruger's or the manufacturer's.

It is not difficult to design a drop–in automatic sear, to trip it and bypass the trigger sear to allow the 10/22 to, theoretically, cycle automatically.
