A sound reconnaissance and surveillance plan is crucial to the success of any Military operation. Learn more in this comprehensive guide that covers topics, such as, techniques, and procedures (TTP) for reconnaissance and surveillance (R&S) planning, mission management, and reporting.

Throughout history, military leaders have recognized the importance of reconnaissance and surveillance (R&S).

Gaining and maintaining contact with the enemy is essential to win the battle.

Our own military history contains many examples where our knowledge of the enemy, or lack of knowledge, directly led to victory or defeat. The role of R&S has not changed on the modern battlefield; if anything, it has become even more important. Battles at the combat training centers prove that a good R&S effort is critical to successful attacks. On the other hand, a poor R&S effort almost guarantees defeat for the commander.

This field manual provides tactics , techniques, and procedures (TTP) for reconnaissance and surveillance (R&S) planning, mission management, and reporting.

It provides TTP for the development of intelligence to support counterreconnaissance (CR) operations. It describes employment considerations for R&S assets; and defines the roles of the collection manager and maneuver brigade and battalion S2's in planning R&S operations. It describes their roles in identifying intelligence requirements to support CR operations.

This manual addresses TTP for planning and conducting R&S and developing intelligence to support CR operations at maneuver brigade and below. It can also apply to armored cavalry regiment (ACR) and separate brigades.

This handbook discusses the requirements on providing timely, relevant, accurate, and predictive intelligence support to oneself, one's staff, and subordinates when planning, preparing, and executing decisive actions within the area of operations (AO).

Combat commanders need timely and accurate intelligence.

In order to drive intelligence as a part of the intelligence operating system, commanders must understand what intelligence can do, how to focus it on specific requirements, and how you can integrate it with other operating systems.

Intelligence is your tool; it is the foundation for synchronizing operations, massing combat power and effects, and protecting the force. There is no such thing as perfect intelligence but, when properly focused and planned and executed, intelligence operations are invaluable.

To effectively use intelligence, you must understand; the capabilities and limitations of the intelligence operating system; the intelligence architecture (which includes command and control; processing; collaborative and distributed analysis; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance [ISR] operations; and intelligence networks and communications); how you focus ISR operations and how you and your staff synchronize ISR with other operations.

Written primarily for maneuver commanders and executive officers at brigade or regiment and battalion or squadron levels to include Active Components.

This handbook addresses all these requirements and instructs the user on how to provide timely, relevant, accurate, and predictive intelligence support to oneself, one's staff, and subordinates when planning, preparing, and executing decisive actions within the area of operations (AO).

Comprehensively detailed in this handbook are the techniques and strategies for Special Forces Operations situated in jungle areas. This is an update on the original jungle warfare guide written after the experiences of the Vietnam war, of which most was carried out in the jungle.

These combat training tips are an update on the manual produced in the Vietnam era, which were published in 1970 and captured valuable combat experience in jungle operations.

In 1988 the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (with several joint attachments), conducted an extensive series of jungle operations. They ended the exercises by updating the Vietnam–era tips to cover changes in equipment, weapons, and doctrine. These include many new techniques, such as Night Vision Goggles and Blackhawk tips, and a section on "Hatchet Team" operations.

The lengthy and detailed "PW Snatch," "Breakout," and "Movement Techniques" portions from Vietnam–era tips were excluded because, while important, they are step–by–step "how–to" formats, not "tips," and can be found in other manuals.

These new combat tips were not written to be the replacement for the previous handbook, but to provide the Special Operations community with a report of lessons learned (and relearned) in combat patrolling.

This handbook details doctrine, tactics, techniques, and procedures for the conduct of counterintelligence (CI) operations in support of the Marine air-ground task force (MAGTF). Topics discussed include; identify potential threats, threat capabilities, implementing appropriate security plans and planning and execution of CI operations.

This Marine Corps Doctrinal Publications, Intelligence, and Marine Corps Warfighting Publication, Intelligence Operations, provide the doctrine and higher order tactics, techniques, and procedures for intelligence operations.

The Marine–Corps Counterintelligence Publication complements and expands on this information by detailing doctrine, tactics, techniques, and procedures for the conduct of counterintelligence (CI) operations in support of the Marine air-ground task force (MAGTF). The primary target audience of this publication is intelligence personnel responsible for the planning and execution of CI operations.

The principal objective of CI (counterintelligence) is to assist with protecting friendly forces. CI is the intelligence function concerned with identifying and counteracting the threat posed by hostile intelligence capabilities and by organizations or individuals engaged in espionage, sabotage, subversion or terrorism.

CI enhances command security by denying an adversary information that might be used to conduct effective operations against friendly forces and to protect the command by identifying and neutralizing espionage, sabotage, subversion or terrorism efforts. CI provides critical intelligence support to command force protection efforts by helping identify potential threats, threat capabilities, and planned intentions to friendly operations while helping deceive the adversary as to friendly capabilities, vulnerabilities, and intentions.

Physical security reduces vulnerability. Operations security reduces exposure. Combating terrorism makes us a less lucrative target. CI increases uncertainty for the enemy, thereby making a significant contribution to the success of friendly operations. CI also identifies friendly vulnerabilities, evaluates security measures, and assists with implementing appropriate security plans.

The integration of intelligence, CI, and operations culminates in a cohesive unit force protection program.
