Shooting Ranges

Range clearance can be a hazardous task. Potential accidents can beavoided if all personnel are aware of safety requirements, know their job, and remain alert. It is impossible to describe detailed safety regulations that would cover all situations – the lie of the land, the state of the vegetation, swamps and other land features will make each clearance operation unique.

This publication provides guidance to all personnel concerned with the conduct and supervision of range clearance operations. Organization and procedures for clearance tasks are specified.

This handbook deals with the construction and maintenance of various types ofranges.

The information in this publication relates to range planning, layout and maintenance.

The primary aim of this volume is to present basic standards in order to achieve a degree of national standardization in range construction and layout in the various units and bases across Canada.

These basic standards can also be used as points of departure for engineers when developing plans for future ranges. In addition, those responsible for range maintenance can refer to this volume for information on the maintenance and inspections that have to be performed.

This circular provides information about Army ranges and guidance for developing and operating Army ranges. It is a working guide for trainers, range and mobilization planners, engineers, coordinators, and mandated range project review boards at all levels of the Active Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve.

It is the primary guide for installation and major Army command range development plans and for developing the Army Master Range Plan.
